Luxury Apartments Built On Joe Louis Arena Site ‘The Residences at Water Square’ Is Now Open

Joe Louis Arena has been transformed into luxury apartments. A celebration on Tuesday, Feb. 6 marked the opening of Detroit’s first all-glass residential high-rise, the Residences at Water Square.

The building has been constructed on the site of the old Joe Louis Arena, which stood until the arena was demolished in 2019-20. Nearby is Hunting Place (formerly known as Cobo Hall) convention center and the People Mover station. The building is said to have about 500 units and will range from studios to two-bedroom penthouses on the 25th floor.  Each of the apartments features ten-foot ceilings, an outdoor pool and sundeck, a rooftop terrace, sky lounges and a fitness center and is pet friendly.

According to Mayor Mike Duggan, this new high-rise symbolizes the city’s recovery from bankruptcy. Duggan told the press, “You had a soon-to-be-abandoned hockey arena on this site, and the city in 2014, the idea of building a new high-rise? You think about what you had here at the time — the David Whitney Building sat empty, the David Stott Building sat empty, the Book Building sat empty, the train station sat empty.”

Danny Samson, Sterling Group Chief Development Officer, said residents will be able move into the building sometime this month. The high-end luxury apartments are said to start at $2,000 a month. Units on the 23rd floor will be about $4,700 a month for a one-bedroom apartments.

Urbanize Detroit reports Samson said in a statement to the media, “This is a new standard for downtown and riverfront living in Detroit. Our goal was to create something that didn’t exist in this market until now. Every design choice we made, every amenity we added was about giving our residents a truly unique living experience.” At the ribbon-cutting, Sterling Group was praised for this latest project, one of several high-profile developments and redevelopments it has undertaken in Detroit since Gary Torgow founded the firm there in 1988.

Man Living In New York City’s 'Smallest Apartment' Gives Tour Of Inside

New York is known for its incredibly high rents and tiny apartments. TikToker AJ Webber claims he lives in the smallest apartment in New York City, and in a now-viral clip with over 21 million views, he gives us a full tour.

He opened the video by saying, “Heres what it’s like living in the smallest apartment in New York. Whatever your expectations are, lower them.”

Opening the front door, we’re immediately met with a sink. Right next to it, there is a small kitchen and pantry stocked with boxed carbohydrates, such as mac and cheese, popcorn and of course, instant ramen noodles. “There’s no nutritional value here,” AJ says. Also on the shelves are a single bowl and plate.

He then shuffled over to his “living quarters,” and impressively shows off two beds that fit in his tiny apartment. “Some nights I’m a queen guy, other nights I chill on the twin.” He also showed us his closet and his piano before ending the video by playing a few keys.

“This is half a dorm room. Are you ok?” wrote one person.

Another person said, “Whatever you’re paying is too much.”

Calling back to AJ’s intro, another person commented, “i lowered my expectations and still, they were too high.”
