Dutch Girl Donuts Reopening in 2024
In 2021, the beloved Detroit donut shop closed its doors permanently, but plans to reopen next year under the leadership of a new owner. Dutch Girl Donuts was founded by the Timmer family in 1947 and was recently acquired by Paddy Lynch, whose family owns The Schvitz and several funeral homes in metro Detroit.
A special bond exists between the Lynch and Timmer family because, Paddy’s cousin, Tim Lynch Jr, who runs Lynch & Sons Walled Lake, has known the Timmer family since childhood and even handled the funeral services for Gene and Lauren Timmer. Lynch’s mother, who attended Marygrove College in the early 1970s, lived in the University District during the early years of his parents’ courtship. Whenever his father visited her, he often stopped by the donut shop.
Paddy Lynch, spoke to the media about reopening Dutch Girl Donuts saying, “I’m extremely grateful, honored and excited to carry this local favorite forward for the Timmer family.” She also said, “My family has loved Dutch Girl since before I was born.”
Dutch Girl’s customers can expect the same doughnuts they’ve come to love, since Jon Timmer, the grandson of the founders, will continue to make the delicious warm pastries. According to a press release, the iconic donut shop will reopen at its original location in early 2024. Tim Lynch says, “Dutch Girl Donuts is an institution for many Detroiters. I’m looking forward to this journey and to working with Jon Timmer to get Dutch Girl up and running in the early new year.”
