HBCU in Detroit Opens New State Of The Art Footwear Studio
Students at Pensole Lewis College Detroit have the chance to design and manufacture shoes at the Foot Locker Footwear Creation Studio. Foot Locker and PLC Detroit officials believe the studio’s influence will extend well beyond its walls. 200 Walker Street hosted a grand opening ceremony Wednesday morning that was attended by a number of state and local leaders and community stakeholders.
PLC Detroit President D’Wayne Edwards, spoke with the media about the partnership with Footlocker and how this will impact the school saying, “You don’t see it at many schools the way that we have laid it out, and our partnership with Foot Locker allowed this to happen. You have every machine that you need to make a pair of dress shoes, sneakers, or boots all in there.”

There is only one historically black college or university in the nation, with their main focus being with the design program and that’s PLC Detroit. PLC was founded nearly 100 years ago as Lewis Business College, but due to a decline in enrollment and the college loosing its accreditation, it closed sadly its doors in 2015. In 2021, Edwards reestablished the college, bringing decades of experience in footwear design to PLC.
Foot Locker Chief Operations Officer Elliot Rodgers is excited about the opportunity to work with PLC Detroit saying, “We are super excited to have the opportunity to inspire the next generation of creators,” per Yahoo Finance. Foot wear is a huge market especially in black community. Brands like Nike, Jordan and Adidas have made impact not only in sports, but in urban streetwear as well. They are the reason a lot of kids get into designing clothing and sneakers because of how popular their brands are. Footlocker has played an instrumental part in the distribution of these brands as well. Kids everywhere are always excited to see the latest fashion trends when they enter a Footlocker location.
