Part of I-96 in Michigan to Close for 10 Days
Fall is here, and usually that means a slowdown in road construction. But, certain sections of I-96 in Michigan aren’t getting a rest from the construction. On one hand, that’s good, because the repairs are needed, but that can mean a big inconvenience for drivers.
In fact, a major portion of I-96 is scheduled to close for 10 days for repair starting on Saturday (Oct. 15). The closing is to complete a $6 million resurfacing project.
The part of I-96 that will be closed is between I-196 and US-131. Westbound I-96 will be closed starting at 1 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 15), according to the Michigan Department of Transportation. I-96 will be shut down, one direction at a time, between US-131 and Leonard Street. Traffic from those areas will be taken to westbound I-196 and northbound US-131 for a detour route.
The closure is projected to take place from Oct. 15 through Oct. 24. But, according to MDOT officials, it could run longer, depending on weather delays. In the end, the effort will resurface five miles of I-96 running from the Grand River to Leonard Street. This is the latest construction piece in the area, following workers recently finishing the eastbound part of the project, which should be completed in full by late November.
