Michigan Has One of the Worst Places in America to Retire
I know of many retired people who live in Michigan, and I have to say, they love it. The winters can be harsh, but overall, Michigan offers a great state to enjoy the lakes in the summer and beautiful views in the winter. That’s not to mention some pretty cool sports teams, fall colors and more.
But, according to one new study, one Michigan city is among the least desirable places in America to retire. I reject this notion, since my grandparents lived in the Detroit area until they passed away and loved it. But, this is what at least one study says.
The crew at Wallethub.com has put together a study on the best places to retire in America. “To help Americans plan an affordable retirement while maintaining the best quality of life, WalletHub compared the retiree-friendliness of more than 180 U.S. cities across 46 key metrics,” they state in the study. “Our data set ranges from the cost of living to retired taxpayer-friendliness to the state’s health infrastructure.” The site used four key dimensions: affordability, activities, quality of life and health care.
They evaluated those dimensions using 46 relevant metrics. “Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the most favorable conditions for retirement,” the study states. They add that they “determined each city’s weighted average across all metrics to calculate its overall score and used the resulting scores to rank-order our sample.”
So, which Michigan city is at the bottom? Detroit is ranked the fifth least desirable place to retire in America. The Motor City is only behind Lubbock, Texas; Wichita, Kansas; Baltimore, Maryland; and Vancouver, Washington. The best places to retire in America, according ot hte study, are Charleston, South Carolina; followed by Orlando, Florida; Cincinnati, Ohio; Miami, Florida; and Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
