Detroit Ranks Tenth For Cities With The Rudest Kids In The U.S.

A survey found that when it comes to the rude kids, Detroit ranks tenth in the United States. Rankings were done by residents of the cities surveyed.

Solitaired.com, surveyed people in 28 cities throughout the U.S. and asked what factors they thought that rude kids had.

Participants ranked how rude kids in three age ranges were; younger kids 5 to 8 years old, and finally, older kids 9 to 12 years old and teens (13 -17). Based on the results; being attached to phones was the rudest behavior, followed by cursing and lastly, playing music or videos too loud.

Additionally, not saying hello, not making eye contact and disobeying rules were in the top ten of rude behaviors.

Ten cities with rudest kids:

  1. Philadelphia, PA (7.21)
  2. San Francisco, CA (6.78)
  3. New York, New York (6.55)
  4. Las Vegas, NV (6.52)
  5. Columbus, OH (6.43)
  6.  Jacksonville, FL (6.15)
  7. Louisville, KY (6.14)
  8. Milwaukee, WI (6.04)
  9. Chicago, IL (6.04)
  10. Detroit, MI (6.00)

People who responded, ranked rudeness  on a 1 – 10 scale, with 10 being the rudest. Of those cities 5.9 was average, and based on the rankings, the top 12 cities were above the average.

49% of people believed kids are rudest to their parents, then followed by being rude to peers (28%) finally, strangers came in last (23%).

  • Rudest behaviors by age ranges:
    • 5 -8: 
      1. Disobeying rules
      2. Not saying please and thank you
      3. Making a mess
    • 9 – 12: 
      1. Being absorbed in their phones
      2. Playing music or videos too loudly
      3. Not saying hello
    • 13 – 17: 
      1. Being absorbed in their phones
      2. Cursing
      3. Playing music or videos too loudly

Kids aged 14 – 17 were considered the rudest. Finally, when it comes to rude kids, Detroit ranked number ten overall, but here is how each age range ranked overall:

  • 5 – 8 (9th)
  • 9 – 12 (2nd)
  • 13 – 17 (4th)

Four Michigan Cities Ranked In Bottom Half Of Worst Places To Live In The U.S.

U.S News & World Report has released their list of the 150 Best Places to Live in the United States, and for 2023 – 2024. Four Michigan cities; Lansing (81), Kalamazoo (90), Detroit (114) and Flint (130) were ranked in the bottom half.

In order to come up with the list, data is collected from the United States Census Bureau, the FBI, the United States Department of Labor and U.S. News’ internal resources. The data they collected was then weighted based on response to a public survey, where people voted on the most important factors when choosing a place to live. Those factors and their weight were:

Quality of Life (36%), ranks how happy residents are with their day to day lives in each metro area, and includes the following factors:

  • Crime Rates (25%)
  • Quality of Education (19%)
  • Well-being (19%)
  • Commuter Index (16%)
  • Quality and Availability of Health Care (9%)
  • Air Quality Index (AQI) (7%)
  • Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) National Risk Index (5%).

Value Index (23%), this measures how comfortably residents can afford to live within their means in a metro area and includes the following factors; the Housing Affordability Index and the Price Parity Index.

Desirability Index (22%), whether people want to live in a certain metro area.

  • Desirability Survey (65%)
  • Net Migration (15%)
  • Weather Temperateness (10%)
  • Establishment-to-Population Ratio (10%)

Job Index Market (19%) is the final factor and takes into consideration the Unemployment Rate and Average Salary.

To calculate the final overall score, and balance the results, they gave all factors a Z-Score for standard deviation. (You can read more on that at the link below).

Based on this list, the worst place to live in the state of Michigan is Flint followed by Detroit, Kalamazoo and Lansing. Two Michigan cities (Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids) ranked in the top 20, see where here.
