3.0 H.S. GPA Guarantees Admission to 10 Michigan Universities
Michigan high school graduates with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher will receive guaranteed admission to ten out of the 15 public universities in the state, as announced by state leaders on Tuesday. This initiative, called the Michigan Assured Admission Pact (MAAP), is set to begin offering guaranteed admission to eligible students starting in the fall 2024 admission cycle.
How guaranteed admission works.
High school students interested in attending one of these universities will still need to complete individual applications for admission. This program does not impact the cost of attending these institutions, but a separate state scholarship program is available to assist families in reducing educational expenses.
University officials emphasize that this pact does not compromise admission standards for these institutions; instead, it simplifies the college admissions process and provides a clear message to prospective students.
Participating schools.
The participating universities in the MAAP include Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, Ferris State University, Lake Superior State University, Northern Michigan University, Oakland University, Saginaw Valley State University, University of Michigan-Dearborn, University of Michigan-Flint, and Wayne State University.
The University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Michigan State University, Grand Valley State University, Michigan Technological University, and Western Michigan University are not part of this agreement.
Dan Hurley, CEO of the Michigan Association of State Universities, believes this guaranteed admission program, along with the Michigan Achievement Scholarship, will help students get degrees and increase university enrollment.
The Michigan Achievement Scholarship offers up to $5,500 yearly to support students attending a Michigan public university. Scholarships for attending independent nonprofit colleges or two-year community colleges in the state are provided at lower amounts.
Similar programs
In other states, there are similar programs to simplify the college admissions process. For instance, in Washington, high schools can share student data with colleges and universities to determine eligibility for admission before formal application.
The University of Tennessee Board of Trustees recently passed a proposal to guarantee admission to high school graduates meeting specific criteria, ensuring more certainty and early planning for college-bound students. This guarantee applies to all UT undergraduate campuses and is extended to students who finish in the top 10% of their high school’s graduating class or achieve a cumulative GPA of 4.0 or higher.
“Identifying these standards allows us to make earlier admissions offers for more Tennessee students, and it allows them to start planning for their college experience with more certainty,” UT System President Randy Boyd said.
