Jared Goff Beats Kirk Cousins for SI’s Best Quarterback in the NFC North
The buzz on Jared Goff is real. I’m a big fan of his playing and what he’s brought to the Detroit Lions, so I’m very happy to see the quarterback getting some much-deserved attention and respect inside the NFL. Now, Goff has been named the best quarterback in the NFC North.
It was between Goff and Kirk Cousins of the Minnesota Vikings. In the end, Goff ranked “just a shade” below Cousins in the latest list from Sports Illustrated. Regarding Cousins, writer Christian Booher says, “Cousins has one of the league’s best wideouts on his team, and has taken full advantage. However, he has struggled in the big moments and in primetime games.”
Best Quarterback in the NFC North:
In the article, Sports Illustrated put Goff at No. 1 on their tally of the best quarterbacks in the NFC North. Booher notes that Goff was was “impeccable” during the second half of the Lions’ 2022 season. That’s so true. Just look at the numbers. Goff threw for 29 touchdowns and had only seven interceptions on 587 pass attempts during the final nine games of the Lions’ season last year. That led him to having the lowest interception percentage of his career at 1.2 percent. Goff also didn’t throw even a single interception during the team’s final nine games of the season. Finally, during those nine games, Goff produced 15 touchdowns. The Lions’ record for the second half of the season was 7-2.
Booher also notes that regarding the success of Goff in the second half of the season, “In doing so, he earned much more job security moving forward with the Lions. The California native has established a good rapport with offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, and aims to lead the offense to new heights in 2023.” Will this trend continue in 2023? I truly believe it will. I actually think Goff is an elite quarterback at this point. Look out, world. Goff and the Lions are coming for you.
