Rolling Stone Puts Some ‘Respect’ On Aretha Franklin
In the latest version of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list, that was released on Wednesday, they named Detroit’s own Aretha Franklin as the number one song of all time. According to Rolling Stone, the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list was made from ballots submitted by over 250 musicians, journalists, producers and other people involved within the music industry. This is the third version of Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The first edition had “Respect” coming in at No. 5 and Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone” come in at number 1. That issue was released in 2004. It was republished six years later to incorporate 26 new songs from the early 2000s.
This isn’t the first time Detroit musicians have topped a Rolling Stone list. Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” came in at the No. 1 spot on the magazine’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list, in the 2020 version of that list. Motown musician James Jamerson was named the No. 1 Greatest 50 Bassists players of All Time, which was published in 2020 as well. As you can tell, Motown music tends to chart Rolling Stone lists quite frequently.
Detroit, Rolling Stone puts some ‘Respect’ On The Queen of Souls name by having her top their 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list.
