Firework Do’s and Don’ts in Detroit
If you plan on lighting some fireworks off this Fourth of July weekend, here are some things you need to know to make sure your following Michigan protocols and having a safe and enjoyable holiday. To begin, licensed facilities MUST only sell fireworks to people 18 years of age or older. Low impact fireworks such as sparklers, toy snakes, poppers etc., are also legal for sale and use.
Next, state law requires that fireworks only be lit from personal property. It is illegal in the state of Michigan to ignite fireworks on public property. This includes streets, sidewalks, schools, churches, or another person’s property without their permission. State law also says it is illegal to light fireworks when intoxicated and/or under the influence of drugs.
Finally, in case of an incident caused by fire works that resulted in property damage, injury or death of another person, the individuals involved may be charged with a misdemeanor or a felony. They could spend more than five years in prison and up to $10,000 in fines or a combination of both. Detroit, enjoy your Fourth of July holiday and be safe and smart.
