Sports Betting and Legal Online Gambling to Start Friday in Michigan

It’s official: Online gambling and online sports betting will be legal Friday (Jan. 22).

Today (Jan. 19), the Michigan Gaming Control Board approved the first nine casinos and their online partners. More approvals are on the way, too.

Both the Legislature and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer legalized internet gambling and sports betting in December 2019, and it’s taken this long to get all the rules worked out. The minimum age for online gambling and sports betting is 21. While those betting don’t need to be Michigan residents, they do have to be inside the state’s borders when betting on a smartphone app or computer.

Here are the first casinos and their online partners approved:

FanDuel, for MotorCity Casino
BetMGM/Roar Digital, for MGM Grand Detroit
Penn Sports Interactive/ Barstool Sportsbook, for Greektown Casino
DraftKings, for the Bay Mills Indian Community
William Hill, for the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians
TwinSpires, for the Hannahville Indian Community
Golden Nugget Online Gaming, for the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community
Rush Street, for the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians
Wynn, for the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians
