Detroit’s Midtown Area Getting Free, Outdoor Public WiFi in 2021
Detroit is getting free, outdoor public WiFi in 2021 thanks to a $500,000 grant from The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
The WiFi will be available in Detroit’s Cultural Center, encompassing a handful of cultural buildings and museums in Midtown on Woodward Avenue. The wireless system will be an extension of WSU’s existing campus system.
WiFi will be available in the following Cultural Center areas: Carr Center, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, College for Creative Studies, Detroit Historical Museum, Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Public Library, Hellenic Museum of Michigan, International Institute of Metropolitan Detroit, Michigan Science Center, The Scarab Club, University of Michigan and Wayne State University.
Additional funding to make the WiFi possible came from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation.
