Amazon Poised to Build $400-Million Distribution Center in Detroit on Former State Fairgrounds
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan announced Tuesday (Aug. 11) that a proposed land sale at Detroit’s old state fairgrounds is poised to become a $400 million Amazon distribution center.
The sale, which is still awaiting approval by the city council, involves a 142-acre plot of land, found north of State Fair Avenue near Woodward and Eight Mile.
Duggan says the land is worth $9 Million, and the deal has “no tax breaks or incentives” for Amazon attached to it.
The Amazon Distribution center would be built by 2022 and yield 1,200 new jobs that pay $15.00 an hour.
The Amazon deal is also slated to pay an additional $7 million for a new transit center on Woodward, which could include an indoor waiting area for public transportation riders that use that bus route.
If approved by the city council, construction would start towards the end of October.
The Amazon deal was reportedly secured by The Sterling Group.
