‘It’s My Time’: Coco Jones Talks Bel-Air, New Music, and Embracing Her Moment
Coco Jones, the singer, actress, and writer, talked with Tune-Up Man from 105.9 Kiss FM talking about her journey from childhood acting to starring in Peacock’s Bel-Air and making waves in the music world. Here’s what she had to say.
From Disney to Hollywood
Coco’s story started with hard work and perseverance. “Honestly, auditioning,” Coco said when asked how she got her start. Growing up in Nashville, she took every opportunity, from background acting to small roles. “Little by little, bigger opportunities came along,” she recalled her early days with Disney.
Landing the Role of Hilary Banks in Bel-Air
To date, one of her most iconic roles is playing Hilary Banks in Peacock’s Bel-Air, the reimagined version of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Coco admitted she was initially hesitant to audition. “I didn’t think I fit the original Hilary Banks look,” she said, but her acting management pushed her to give it a shot.
What makes this role special? Coco says it’s her first time not being put in a box. “They let me bring my ideas… Hilary’s a boss, she’s building her brand, and I really relate to that,” Coco shared.
Fans love the chemistry between Hilary and Jazzy, but Coco laughs off the constant questions. “I’m just the actor doing my job,” she says, but she admits she hears fans root for the underdog in the love triangle all the time.
Season 3 Success and What’s Ahead
Bel-Air is now entering its third season, with a fourth on the way. “There’s so much content out there,” Coco said, that it’s rare for people to consistently tune in. “To have people coming back to watch is an incredible gift.”
Coco is excited to see where her character and the show go next, and she expresses gratitude for the team of writers who keep audiences on the edge of their seats.
Coco Jones the Musician
Coco dream of making it big in the music industry is finally coming to reality with fan favorite, I See You. “It’s about the push and pull of love,” Coco said. “That feeling when someone makes you feel amazing but also frustrates you—it’s something a lot of people relate to, especially women.”
Her single Here We Go also showcases her versatility. “I love the Lenny Williams sample,” she said. “R&B is about all those emotions—anger, passion, heartbreak—and I’m excited to show different sides of myself.”
Awards and Recognition
The past year has been huge for Coco. From the Soul Train Awards to the NAACP Image Awards, she’s been recognized for both music and acting. Coco said, “It’s a relief. I’ve been doing this since I was nine, and now I’m finally getting the recognition. It feels like it’s my time.”
What’s Next for Coco?
“I’ve got a single with Future dropping this month—it’s a trap ballad, bringing our two worlds together,” she said. Her debut album is expected early next year, followed by a tour in the summer. “That’s the plan for sure,” she confirmed.
When asked what secrets she has planned for 2025, Coco joked, “I don’t even know myself! But my debut album is the main focus. I’m excited for people to see the version of Coco I am now.”
But she remains grounded, but with your head in the clouds, a little saying for anyone looking to get into this business, “You gotta be a little delusional,” she laughed. “You’ll see a version of yourself that no one else can see yet, but you have to believe in it and keep pushing forward.”
