Martha Reeves faces funding deadline for Hollywood Walk of Fame star
Motown singer Martha Reeves was selected in June 2021 for a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Reeves was nominated by a former manager and was given the opportunity by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce.
The Walk of Fame stars cost around $55,000 covering costs like installation. Some recipients have their fee covered by a related movie studio, record label or a friend. Recipients unable to have the fee covered launch private and public fundraising efforts.
According to the Detroit Free Press, the Detroit based singer said that she was assured by the former manager that funding for the star was being taken care of. She was confident her Hollywood ceremony would occur following her nomination in 2022.
If Reeves’ star isn’t funded by June, her two-year nomination window will expire. Her new manager Chris Roe has launched a public fundraising campaign with the hopes to secure $55,000 by June and get Reeves a star on the 2024 Walk of Fame.
Fundraising Efforts
“As Martha’s manager, I have taken over this effort, but I need your help! Of course, at the end of the day it’s all about money!” said Roe on his management website. “We will be looking to accrue the sum required by The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and other associated expenses that we will need to fulfill this effort. (approx. $80,000). Just the cost of the actual star (no, it is not given free) is now $55,000.00,” he said. Roe also mentioned that there are additional expenses including flights, hotel, and a reception afterwards. Those expenses come to about $25,000.
Reeves was the singer of legendary Motown group Martha and the Vandellas. Their hits included “Heat Wave,” “Nowhere To Run,” “Jimmy Mack” and “Dancing In the Street.” They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995. Reeves later moved into politics. She was a Detroit councilwoman from 2005 until 2009.
