Wayne State University Hosting Boxing Showdown
The biggest fight of the night will be between Flint’s Ardreal Holmes Jr. and Detroit’s Marlon Harrington. Holmes Jr. will be looking to defend his USBA Super Welterweight Championship in the fight. The event, which will take place at Wayne State Fieldhouse, will even be live-streamed on DAZN at 8pm! That’s huge for the boxing community and for us right here in Detroit, too!
Holmes Jr. served as an alternate at the 2016 U.S. Olympics. He fought at Little Caesars Arena in June, beating Wendy Toussaint by a technical decision.
Toussaint suffered a cut on his forehead that led to the fight being stopped in the 8th round. Holmes Jr. is hoping to have a better performance and is out to make a name for himself.
“I’m thankful and very excited to be having my first title defense in my home state,” said Holmes, per Click On Detroit. “The fans are going to be the winner on Feb. 20 because this fight, and the whole card, are going to be action-packed. I’m going to show all the fans in Detroit and watching on DAZN who the best guy at 154 pounds is. This performance is going to put the whole division on notice.”
He will be going up against Harrington in the fight. Harrington is entering the fight fresh off a pair of stoppage victories following a decision loss to Marquis Taylor back in 2022.
According to Click On Detroit, he stopped Ramses Agaton in the third round last September. Harrington does not overlook his opponent but aims to put on a great performance for the hometown crowd.
“I’m not underestimating this guy,” Harrington told Click On Detroit. “I know the opposition I’m up against, so we just got to turn it up a notch. I’m looking to put on a show as usual. It’s not my first time in front of the hometown crowd, and I just want to give the fans what they want to see.”
Michigan: Here Are the 10 Best Colleges in the State
Each year, U.S. News & World Report comes out with its rankings for the best colleges in the United States. Michigan, of course, is known for having great colleges and universities, so it’s no surprise that the Mitten is a often a favorite on the list.
Now, U.S. News & World Report has released its 2022-2023 Best Colleges rankings, and a whopping 46 colleges and universities in Michigan were ranked among the best. So which schools were on top?
U.S. News has been publishing this guide of the best colleges across the U.S. for almost 40 years. According to a release, methodology has evolved over the years to reflect changes in higher education, says Kim Castro, editor and chief content officer at U.S. News. U.S. News prides itself on offering a ranking for millions of parents with “useful data and information to help with one of life’s biggest decisions,” Castro said.
In this year’s study, U.S. News ranked a massive 1,500 colleges and universities in 17 academic measures. When going about ranking, U.S. News first put each school into a category based on its mission and, sometimes, its geographic location. There are also different lists for different kinds of universities. National universities are research-heavy and have several doctoral programs, while liberal arts colleges are ranked separately.
Regarding Michigan’s schools, U.S. News states, “Top colleges and universities are located throughout Michigan and in cities such as Detroit, Grand Rapids, Flint, Kalamazoo and Ann Arbor. Lansing, the state capital, is home to one of the largest colleges in the U.S., Michigan State University, which enrolls more than 37,000 undergraduate students annually. Higher education options in Michigan include large research universities, private midsize colleges and several small, notable liberal arts colleges.” Read on for 10 Michigan colleges and universities that made the cut. I’m happy to see my alma matter, Michigan State University, on the tally.
