Philip B. Downing – Black History is American History
was born in 1857 in Rhode Island to prominent parents. His father, an abolishist, encouraged his six children to use their god-given talents to make a difference tin the world and he did just that. He filed at least five patents with the US patent office. Among his most significant one was the street letter mailbox. Downing also enjoyed a long career as a postal clerk in Boston. Retiring in 1927 after working for more than thirty years.
