The ‘Husband Calling’ Competition Will Have You In Tears
Viola Davis shared a viral clip to her Instagram today (January 19) of a hilarious “husband calling” contest. (The contest actually took place at an Iowa State Fair in 2017.) The Woman King star wrote in the caption: “JUUULLLLIIIIUUUUSSS!!!!” Davis’ video may have been viewed nearly half a million times, but TikTok user @_rhinestonecowboy, posted the video last week and it has amassed over 17 million views. The TikTok page posted a part two of the same competition a few years later as well, which has over a million views.
One person hilariously commented on Davis’ post, “Y’all laughing but some of these husbands are being triggered #makeitstop.” Another said, “I would hide in an abandoned well if that was calling for me.” Yet another wrote, “Lmaooo I can’t stop laughing. Yoohooo! Yoo-hoo! Kookooo! The clock says!” Another stated, “The fact that this exists…only in Amurica.”
The first place winner, who blew her competition out of the water was an elderly woman. During her performance she yelled, “ROY! Can you hear me? You get yourself in here right now! Come on, you know you’re gonna be late again and you know that I want to get there on time. Royee! Roy Roy Roy Roy Royee!” Then, as soon as she’s done, she calmly turns to hand the mic off. One person commented, “I’m not Roy but I don’t want her to be late either.”
According to the Iowa State Fair’s marketing director Mindy Williamson, the husband calling contest is a part of the Heritage competitions held in Pioneer Hall at the Fairgrounds and features about 12 to 15 entries every year. The TikTok video, clipped from an Iowa PBS video of the contest, illustrates that year’s top five finalists’ efforts to win the grand prize of $5. Other contests include mom calling, hog calling, and more competitive and unique family-friendly events. The schedule of contests is posted in mid-summer before the fair starts and potential entrants can typically sign up an hour before the competitions begin at Pioneer Hall.
