‘FRIDAY’ PREMIERED IN THEATERS 25 YEARS AGO!
The timeless classic ‘Friday’ recently celebrated its 25th anniversary (Saturday) which grossed $28 million in box office sales and spawned two sequels — can we get a “daaaaaamn”!
Why do people love this franchise so much? Ice cube had the perfect response…
“For one thing, everybody can be Craig and Smokey,” Ice Cube told Billboard in 2015, in honor of the movie’s 20th anniversary re-release on, naturally, 4/20. “You can always kick it with Craig, the homeboy or homegirl, just kick it all day and trip off your neighborhood. That’s what people do every day. It strikes a chord there.”
John Witherspoon, who passed away last year, confirmed production of a Last Friday during a brief radio interview. Chris Tucker said that Friday was a “moment in time” and was concerned about being too old to play out the youthful and immature antics require to fulfill the role of Smokey:
“I was a young kid. I was laughing through the whole thing. I was proud of that, making myself laugh. I don’t know if I could do another one because I was so young and it was a moment in time. But we’ll see.” -Chris Tucker
