Nia long On ‘The Banker’ And Finding Her Voice As a Producer
On March 26, Nia Long’s new film The Banker will be released on Apple TV+, and the actress recently sat down with Newsweek to talk about it.”I was really excited because I hadn’t read a script in a long time that showed black people in finance,” Long told Newsweek Conversations about the film that is based on a true story about Joe Morris and Bernard Garrett.
Samuel L. Jackson portrays Morris’ character and Anthony Mackie plays the role of Garret. Morris and Garret were two of the first successful African American investment bankers in the post-Civil Rights era of the United States.
“We need to teach our children and reeducate our children that, we’re here now. We have an opportunity to be whatever it is that we want,” Long said regarding the message behind The Banker.
“What I love about the film is you can take your mother, your father, your brother, your husband and your children. I’m taking my 8-year-old to see it. Because there’s nothing in the film that’s inappropriate. It’s a real history lesson.”
Long is currently preparing to tell her own stories later on this year with Netflix’s Fatal Affair. It’ll be the first film that the 30-year veteran actress is producing. She will also star in the movie.”For me, it was really about having a voice in the process,” Long said.
The Banker hits select theaters starting March 6. The film will also be released on Apple TV+ on March 26.
