Hip-Hop’s Hottest Collaborations of 2019
Collaborations are essential in hip-hop and in 2019 a lot of them were hits. Some of hip-hop’s 2019 collaborations were also nominated for 2020 Grammy Awards. From Megan Thee Stallion and Nicki Minaj to Da Baby and Offset, check out some of hip-hop’s hottest collaborations of 2019.
Megan Thee Stallion “Hot Girl Summer” ft. Ty Dolla $ign & Nicki Minaj
Megan Thee Stallion’s single “Hot Girl Summer” featuring Ty Dolla $ign and Nicki Minaj, which dropped in August, was already complete sans Minaj before the rap game’s Barbie became an addition. Minaj was added after an Instagram Live session between the “Chun-Li” rapper and Megan, which sent Hot Girl Meg’s Hotties and Minaj’s Barbs into a frenzy.
Lil Nas X “Old Town Road” ft. Billy Ray Cyrus
Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” was actually released in December of 2018 but the viral record made phenomenal waves during 2019 after Columbia Records re-released it as a single due to its success. The remix of the record featuring ’90s country star Billy Ray Cyrus dropped in April 2019 and has been nominated for several 2020 Grammys including “Record of the Year” and “Best Pop Duo/Group Performance.” The music video for the song was also nominated for “Best Music Video.”
DJ Khaled “Higher” ft. Nipsey Hussle & John Legend
Perhaps Nipsey Hussle’s untimely death played a role in the success of DJ Khaled’s single “Higher” featuring the late rapper (who was fatally shot in March 2019) and John Legend. The single garnered a Grammy nomination for “Best Rap/Sung Performance” at the 62nd annual Grammy Awards. The video for the single was Hussle’s final video, and after consulting with the co-producers and songwriters of the song, DJ Khaled decided to donate 100% of all of the single’s proceeds to Nipsey Hussle’s children, Emani and Kross, as the LA Times reported.
Russ “Best On Earth” ft. Bia
Atlanta rapper Russ enlisted former Sisterhood of Hip-Hop star Bia for his catchy single “Best On Earth.” The single only charted at No. 44 on Billboard‘s U.S. R&B/Hip Hop chart. However, it charted at No. 2 on the iTunes hip-hop/R&B charts thanks to Rihanna’s assistance. The Bajan pop star shared the song on her Instagram page calling it her “favorite song.”
Wale “On Chill” ft. Jeremih
Released in July of 2019, Wale’s “On Chill” featuring Jeremih peaked at No. 22 on Billboard‘s US Hot 100 chart. The single, from Wale’s latest album, Wow… That’s Crazy, features a sample of the keyboards from Raphael Saadiq’s 2005 single “Ask of You” giving the song a nostalgic old school feel. “On Chill” also reached No. 1 on Billboard‘s Rhythmic chart.
Da Baby “Baby Sitter” ft. Offset
DaBaby’s single “Baby Sitter” dropped in April of 2019 and features Offset. The song comes from DaBaby’s debut album Baby on Baby. The single peaked at No. 7 on Billboard‘s US 200 chart and it reached No. 3 on Billboard‘s US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. “Baby Sitter” is also currently heavily played on the radio.
Doja Cat’s “Juicy” ft. Tyga
Doja Cat’s single “Juicy” was originally released as a bonus track on her 2018 debut album Amala. The remix of the song featuring rapper Tyga was released as a loose single in 2019. It peaked at No. 8 on Billboard‘s US Rhythmic chart.
