According to Variety, Union was wary of a “toxic culture” around the show. She urged an NBC executive to speak to human resources about a culturally insensitive joke made by Jay Leno when he was on the show.

There was also a white male performer who impersonated Beyonce but used black hands to pull it off.
The stunt was not seen on TV, but it was seen by the live audience. One might say that NBC let Union go because of her speaking out but the network says they regularly “refresh lineups” on the show.
