Multiple organizations in Jackson County are gearing up to celebrate the life and legacy of the late great Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The official MLK Day holiday is Monday, Jan. 16. This is a list of some of the events scheduled for that day and the weekend before.

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Diversity Celebration

    The event begins at at 7:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 13 with a breakfast at the American 1 Event Center, 128 W. Ganson St., at the Jackson County Fairgrounds/Keeley Park. Guest speakers will include three members of Jackson’s Willis family.

  • Jackson College Annual MLK Community Celebration

    Jackson College invite everyone to their annual MLK Day event. A keynote address by Consumers Energy’s vice president and chief diversity officer, Angela Thompkins, will highlight the evening’s theme of “Drum Major for Justice, Peace & Righteousness.”

  • Jackson County Branch NAACP Day of Service

    On Monday, January 16, the Jackson County Branch NAACP will host its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service. The event will take place at the Greater Bible Way Temple, 322 Madison St. The event will feature key speaker Ken Harris, the president/CEO of the National Business League and the Michigan Black Chamber of Commerce. This is a free event. A small lunch will be served during the event and all proceeds from the event will go toward the Harold White Scholarship Fund.
