Funny Black Friday Memes
The year was 1999. The location Wal-Mart. The day…BLACK FRIDAY. The most notorious shopping day of the year. I was working on Black Friday and witnessed firsthand the madness that would become both a running joke and a family past-time. Even though we’ve backed Black Friday up way before the actual date with sales starting sometimes months before, I still remember when it was religiously only on that Friday.
The Origin of Black Friday
While we give the chaos of Black Friday a lot of tongue-in-cheek services, Black Friday has some possible dark origins. According to newsobserver.com, During the 1950s and 1960s, Black Friday was referenced in Philidephia because of the chaos caused by their Army Vs Navy games. The police would refer to the shift as the Black Friday shift. Given the increased traffic on that Friday, retailers tried to capitalize on the buzz but were hesitant to call their sales Black Friday sales. They tried to change the name to “Big Friday” but that didn’t interest shoppers.
In the 1980s a myth started that Black Friday denoted the time when companies that were in a loss (in the red) would start making a profit (in the black). While not completely true, Black Friday does create a significant increase in sales for most companies. These sales have broken off into other forms like Cyber Monday and Small Business Saturday.
But even though there can be yelling, fists flying, and deals galore, we’ve compiled some funny Black Friday memes (and some videos) to help you through it all.
