Best 3D Horror Movies

Remember when it was a badge of honor amongst movies to have a 3D showing? The new 3D technology changed the entertainment industry for years. We even designed 3D technology that no longer needed old-school glasses and the glasses looked like standard glasses. Then the technology advanced to the pinnacle with tech that didn’t even need glasses! 3D TVs were made and then the technology just abruptly declined. We were sort of over it. BUT, I still think the technology was cool and still like it. And how much cooler it made 3D Horror Movies!

3D horror movies go back to 1953 with House of Wax starring Vincent Price. Vincent Price would become a Horror legend and King of 3D Horror. He also starred in the 3D film Mad Magician. 

According to Liveabout.com, the 50s was a booming time for 3D Horror. Some notable features included:

  • House of Wax (1953)
  • It Came from Outer Space (1953)
  • The Maze (1953)
  • Robot Monster (1953)
  • Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)
  • Gorilla at Large (1954)
  • The Mad Magician (1954)
  • Phantom of the Rue Morgue (1954)
  • Revenge of the Creature (1955)

As much as a movie buff I am, the 50s slid under my radar and now being a Horror buff I must have these! I mean, Gorilla at Large??? How good is that? Too good I say!

3D BOOM!

The ’80s was the next solid era because of the boom of slasher films like Friday the 13th and Halloween. While Michael Myers did not get the 3D treatment, Jason Voorhees did with Friday the 13th Part 3 (1982). Which I am happy to say I own a DVD copy of.

The ’90s and early 2000s had a few attempts at a 3D return, but it was not till about 2004 when the Polar Express (not a horror movie unless you are scared of digital Tom Hanks and trains) came out in 3D and did fourteen times the amount of the 2D version did Hollywood took notice. This was followed by a BOOM of 3D films including Horror.

And even though the boom was quick it was prolific and some cool Horror got the 3D treatment.

Here are some Old and New 3D films that are really great in my opinion:  (These are Horror movies, and even though they are trailers, be aware while at work or around small children)

  • House of Wax (1953)

    You have to give props to the original! Vincent Price is a disgruntled sculptor who after a tragic accident, decides to go on a mad revenge plot. Which involves melting people with wax! That’s a dedication to the craft!

  • My Bloody Valentine 3D (2009)

    I am putting this on here because this gave me one of the best movie experiences ever. Some 3D movies were trying a little too hard to meet executive demands to make their movies compatible with 3D and suffered by making odd scenes with 3D in mind. Others really relished in the opportunity and blended the 3D perfectly in where it would SHOCK you. That is what a 3D horror movie should do. And boy, did both me and my brother-in-law jump with the killer through a spear or some pointy object. Our suspension of disbelief was so gone and we were right there. While not the best movie ever, it checked all my boxes for 3D horror.

     

  • Friday the 13th Part 3 (1982)

    In addition to wanting to collect giant school Horror VHS tape display boxes, I love old school Horror. ’80s especially as that was my era growing up. And one of my favorite slasher monsters is Jason Voorhees.  And seeing him do all of his unique kills in 3D is magical. You do have to wear the old-school red-blue glasses though. You pretty much have to wear those with anything because you need a 3D television to watch the modern ones. This sample is 3D so get your glasses out!

     

  • SAW 3D (2010)

    While we could have a heated discussion if SAW and many similar movies that followed are standard horror or “torture porn” it still falls into Horror. And with the standard operation of SAW being torture devices and blood flying everywhere a 3D version makes me want to bring an umbrella.

  • Piranha 3D (2010)

    The 3D genre of Horror movies misses the boat when they are just doing their due diligence and just “adding” 3D. You have to incorporate the effect somehow for maximum impact. And what better chance is there than killer piranhas flying at you (although that may be an oxymoron as all piranhas are killers)?
