Gleyber Torres Thanks 3 Ex-Tigers Stars for Influencing Decision to Join Detroit
In December 2024, Gleyber Torres signed a one-year, $15 million deal to play for the Detroit Tigers after becoming a free agent from the New York Yankees. The move to Detroit ends Torres’ six-year run with the Yankees, where he made his MLB debut in 2018. Torres reportedly exited from the Yankees after being reluctant to switch infield positions with Jazz Chisholm Jr., who was brought in during the 2024 season.
Now, Torres is revealing the names of the former Tigers players who influenced his decision to play ball in Detroit.
“I had a really good conversation with Gio Urshela, for sure, Miguel Cabrera, and also for a long time, Victor Martinez, one of the people to help me during my career,” he told the website SportsKeeda.com. “Those three guys playing Detroit, also Miggy, we know the history and how good they play in Detroit. They gave me really good advice.”
Since spring training began, Torres has felt confident in his game with the Tigers. He registered his first hit during the week of Feb. 24 and recorded an RBI single off the Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Tyler Phillips to boost the Tigers to a 1-0 win on Saturday, March 1.
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch believes the All-Star second baseman is comfortable with and willing to make adjustments to his position ahead of the beginning of the 2025 season.
“He’s been an open book when it’s come to hearing from us on what adjustments he needs to make to be the best version of himself the longest,” Hinch said in comments to SportsKeeda.com. “We’re really happy with his potential and what he can add to our team.”
