Michigan Auto Law Attorney Steve Gursten Talks Trucking Accidents, Insurance, and Cure Automotive
Born and bred in Michigan, Steve Gursten is synonymous with excellence in auto law. Gursten stopped by the Mason & Starr show to talk about his Detroit roots, what to watch out for when buying car insurance and why Cure Automotive is suing him.
From Michigan Roots to National Recognition
With a degree from the University of Michigan and a law degree from a New York Institution, Gursten returned to his roots to join his father’s personal injury law firm. Gursten told Mason his dad’s words still ring in his ears:
“If you want to go into this field, it can’t be just for money. It has to be because you really like people and truly want to help them.”
And boy has he lived up to that!
Understanding the Complexity of Trucking Law
Gursten wanted to make sure Mason and the rest of the Detroit listeners know that trucking law isn’t just auto law with bigger vehicles; it’s a whole new ballgame.
“Trucking law is its own language. You need to understand the federal motor carrier safety rules and the intricate state and federal regulations that apply to trucking cases,” Gursten said.
He told the morning show that Michigan Auto Law is the ONLY firm in Michigan certified in trucking accident law. Gursten’s expertise has taken him to 14 states, earning Michigan’s largest trucking settlements and verdicts. He even educates other lawyers on the subject.
“Many attorneys handle trucking cases like auto accident cases but with larger policy limits. This approach often misses layers of insurance or culpable parties, leaving grieving families without full compensation,” he added.
Why trucking in Michigan is a concern
Michiganians to understand that, in his opinion, Michigan has the least regulations for truck drivers and their companies.
“Michigan’s out-of-service rate is about 1 in 4 trucks, meaning these vehicles have critical issues like bad brakes or tires. Dangerous drivers who can’t find work in other states come here because they know they won’t face punitive damages,” Gursten explained.
Michigan’s Insurance Landscape and Cure Automotive Lawsuit
Michigan’s insurance laws are complex, to say the least. Years ago, Gurten started blogging about what consumers need to understand about driver safety, consumer education, and the insurance industry.
What Gurten didn’t realize was that a post he wrote warning about Cure Automotive would attract almost one million readers each year and bring a defamation lawsuit from the insurance company.
“I write about driver safety, consumer education, and the insurance industry from a unique perspective as an attorney,” Gursten said.
Gursten’s not a fan, to say the least. Cure Insurance quickly climbed to the third-highest in Michigan for consumer complaints, with 76% related to claims handling.
“What they’re doing, called rescission, involves canceling policies after claims are filed. They’re canceling 1.5 policies a day on average, which is unheard of,” he stated. “Insurance only works if it’s there when you need it.”
