One-Word Movie Review: ‘Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1’
Kevin Costner’s Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 is the subject of the latest One-Word Movie Review! What single word best describes the movie?
The segment is back without popular demand. Commenters have previously described it as “click bait,” “terrible,” and “a waste of time.” However, I object. There’s no click bait and it’s exactly what we’re saying it is. I’ll describe the movie and then summarize the movie in only one single word. So, what single word would you use to describe Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1? I share mine in the latest One-Word Movie Review!
Is ‘Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1’ Worth Watching?
Kevin Costner is back in the saddle with his latest Western Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1. It is not related to his hit show Yellowstone at all, and the Dutton family isn’t involved nor mentioned in the movie. However, if you’re a fan of Yellowstone then you’ll likely enjoy the aesthetic and theme of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1.
Costner takes the reigns as director, co-writer, producer, and and star of the epic Western. He plays a character named Hayes Ellison who finds himself in the middle of some beef that he didn’t intend to get into. He’s the good guy and while the character might seem very similar to John Dutton, I must, again, say he is a different character. The movie stars some other big names and notable faces including Sam Worthington, Sienna Miller, Luke Wilson, and more.
If you’re a fan of Westerns then this is probably something you’re going to enjoy. It features some intense battles and seems to be rich in history. Kevin Costner has reportedly been working on this movie since the late ’80s so it’s clearly a passion project for him and something that means a lot. You can feel his passion in the movie. They certainly didn’t cut any corners. Even though they could have and maybe even should have as the movie runs for 181 minutes. I had to break it into two viewing sessions because a 3-hour movie is just a bit too much. Even a great movie can be ruined if it goes on too long. Thankfully, it’s entertaining enough to get you by. A bit of a concern is it’s pretty much a big set-up to the other movies in the saga. Sounds like there are at least four movies planned right now. Most of the movie is spent getting to know the characters and their backgrounds before more drama unfolds in the coming parts. That’s not to say it’s not exciting or thrilling–the movie includes one of the best battle scenes I’ve ever seen.
Horizon: An American Saga currently has a score of 49% on Rotten Tomatoes with the Critics Consensus saying, “Kevin Costner doesn’t lack for ambition as he sketches this frontier saga across the widest of canvases, but Horizon’s first chapter proves too diffuse in scope for it to satisfy as a self-contained endeavor.” However, that’s a bit too wordy, no?
