Michigan saw 33 tornadoes in 2025. That tied the state for third place among the most active seasons since records started in 1950. The state blew past its usual yearly count of 15 twisters by April, according to WGRD.

The year matched 1976 and 1973 for third in the record books. Just two years topped it: 2001 brought 35 tornadoes, while 1974 unleashed 39 across Michigan.

Most of these 33 tornadoes struck on just two days. March 30 and May 15 accounted for the bulk of them. Other dates with twisters included April 2, June 18, July 26, and September 22.

Not one tornado in 2025 reached higher than an F-1 rating. Damage remained minimal, which made the season far less destructive than other years with fewer storms.

Michigan had surpassed its annual average before summer even arrived. Several severe weather systems tore through the region last spring, spawning many tornadoes in just weeks.

Records tracking tornado activity in Michigan stretch back 76 years. The database catalogs all weather events, from blizzards to droughts, according to CBS News.

Officials want 2026 to bring a more typical year. The next few months will show whether Michigan returns to average numbers or if the pattern from 2025 persists.

Weather experts keep watching conditions statewide. Tracking systems stay active to record any future storms that develop.
