Ann Arbor started a rebate program on Nov. 21. Residents get paid to swap gas-powered leaf blowers for rakes or battery-powered alternatives. The program runs through the end of the year or until money runs out.

Rebates cover 100% of a rake's cost. Electric leaf blowers get 50% back, capped at $100. Each household can claim one rebate, according to the city's sustainability office.

All residents must trade in an old gas-powered leaf blower by recycling it through a process outlined on the city's gas leaf blower phase-out webpage, and the rebates can be used at any retailer for any rake or electric/battery-powered leaf blower.

City Council voted in 2023 to approve an ordinance that took effect in 2024 to phase out gas leaf blowers because pollution and noise. The law permits gasoline-burning leaf blowers only from October through May until they're banned year-round starting in 2028.

Voters approved a 20-year climate action millage in 2022 that funds the rebates, and the same funding source supports home energy rebates.

The city has made the transition easier by offering financial support for multiple types of equipment. Residents can access information about both programs through the city's website.
