On Detroit's west side, near Schoolcraft and Outer Drive, Elizabeth Sammut tends to 21 dogs at her makeshift rescue site. She gives these cast-off pets a second shot at life with food, shelter, and medical attention.
"I have 15 on this block, and then we have six on another block," Sammut said, per FOX 2 Detroit. The spot has turned into a place where owners desert their pets.
Each week brings more stranded animals. "They get out of their cars, put the dog on a leash, act like they're walking the dog, let go of the leash, jump in their car, and they pull off," Sammut said.
The rescue work takes place on vacant land Sammut owns while fixing up nearby houses. Detroit Animal Care and Control steps in to give each rescued pet full medical treatment - shots, spaying, neutering, and check-ups.
Under her watch, the once-thin dogs now thrive. Yet their past mistreatment makes finding new homes a challenge. Many still show signs of their rough start in life.
"I just don't want to see them out here starving, and it's about to be winter. It's about to be cold. They can't survive out here," Sammut said. She extends her kindness to stray cats too, making sure they stay fed and safe.
Detroit Animal Care and Control backs the rescue site with vital medical support. Those wishing to pitch in can call (313) 224-6356 to connect with the agency.
