The massive span between Detroit and Windsor will start service in early 2026, pushed back from late 2025. Officials need extra months to check safety systems on the $5.7 billion crossing.
"The project team is progressing well toward construction completion this year with opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge as soon as early 2026," said Heather Grondin, chief relations officer for the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority per The Detroit Free Press. "The exact opening date will depend on our ongoing quality reviews, testing and commissioning."
Work stands at 98% complete across four key sections. The main span, two customs facilities, and Michigan road links near completion. Summer 2024 saw the final bridge deck connection. Now crews install vital systems - from water drainage to safety barriers along the walking path.
At the border stations, the U.S. side will process traffic through 36 lanes, while Canada plans 24. Inside both buildings, workers put final touches on grounds, roads and security fencing.
Testing has started on key systems. Staff check toll equipment, gates, and signs at the Canadian end. They're testing each of the 164 street fixtures and 5,000 LED lights that will light up the crossing.
This structure will rank among North America's ten longest bridges. It rises 150 feet over the Detroit River, with towers stretching 720 feet skyward - making it the biggest link between the two nations.
July marked a big step as crews took down two 797-foot cranes. These giants had lifted the concrete pieces that now hold up the deck.
Cars and bikes will share the crossing. About 6,000 travelers will use it each day between Ontario and Michigan.
"We also need to give sufficient time for our operating teams and border agencies to be ready to operate this new and modern land border crossing between the U.S. and Canada," Grondin said.
