For too long, Detroiters have avoided the courtroom—worried that a few unpaid tickets could land them behind bars. But Judge King of the 36th District Court wants the community to hear something loud and clear: you don’t have to run. Help is waiting.

During his interview with Mason and Angie Starr on 105.9 KISS-FM, Judge King broke down what’s really going on with traffic cases at his court. And it’s a game changer.

“If you have a ticket, we are doing our very best to get those matters resolved,” he explained. “Don’t let fear keep you away.”

He said the majority of traffic tickets on his docket include no insurance or improper plates. And in most cases, those issues stem from financial hardship—not criminal intent.

“We understand. Insurance can cost as much as a car note. People just can’t afford it,” King said. “But we’re not punishing people for being broke.”

If you’ve been caught driving on a suspended license—or even caught multiple times—you still have options. According to Judge King, if you work to get your license or insurance in order before your court date, you could have the entire ticket dismissed.

And if you’ve racked up a mountain of violations?

“Even if you have 30 tickets,” King said, “we’re dismissing the majority of them and only asking you to pay one or two. Then we set you up on a payment plan.”

Angie Starr reacted like many listeners:

“That sounds like a movie!”

“That’s working with the community,” Devon added.

This isn’t just traffic court—it’s a fresh start for people who’ve been driving dirty out of necessity, not neglect. And instead of jail, the court is offering dignity, support, and a path forward.

So if you’ve been hiding from your tickets, here’s your second chance. All it takes is showing up.
