Support Portage Tornado Recovery: Four Ways to Help After Storm Damage
Southwestern Michigan residents, especially those recovering from the Portage Tornado Tuesday night, are still trying to figure out how to dig out of the extensive damage caused by the storm, which destroyed many homes and commercial buildings, including a FedEx building.
Portage Tornado Caused Extensive Damage
Luckily, there were no serious injuries, but many are still trying to dig out after the damage. Over 30,000 people are without power.
During the storm, more than 50 people were trapped inside the FedEx building as the tornado ripped the roof off, trapping them inside. All employees are reported to be safe and accounted for.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer declared a state of emergency for four counties affected by the storm: “My heart goes out to all those impacted by tonight’s severe weather in southwest Michigan.” Emergency teams are working to help those in need.
The American Red Cross has opened up an emergency shelter in Portage for those impacted by the tornadoes.
