Beyoncé Reveals Inspiration Behind Cowboy Carter

This week, Beyoncé shared the official cover for her upcoming album. In doing so, the singer also left a heartfelt message about how this project came about.

"This album has been over five years in the making. It was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed…and it was very clear that I wasn’t," she wrote, seemingly referencing her experience at the 2016 Country Music Awards when she had a surprise performance alongside the Dixie Chicks. "But, because of that experience, I did a deeper dive into the history of Country music and studied our rich musical archive. It feels good to see how music can unite so many people around the world, while also amplifying the voices of some of the people who have dedicated so much of their lives educating on our musical history.

"The criticisms I faced when I first entered this genre forced me to propel past the limitations that were put on me. act ii is a result of challenging myself, and taking my time to bend and blend genres together to create this body of work."

"I have a few surprises on the album, and have collaborated with some brilliant artists who I deeply respect. I hope that you can hear my heart and soul, and all the love and passion that I poured into every detail and every sound."

No confirmed features have been announced on the album including the snippet from Scott. Neither party has confirmed his involvement in the project. However, rumors have been swirling about a potential Dolly Parton cover and a guest feature from Taylor Swift.

Cowboy Carter is out on March 29.

Beyoncé is entering her country era with Renaissance Act II. We all knew that an act two would eventually come after Beyoncé announced that Renaissance would be a trilogy back in 2021.

"This three-act project was recorded over three years during the pandemic," Beyoncé wrote on her website. "A time to be still, but also a time I found to be the most creative."

"Creating this album allowed me a place to dream and to find escape during a scary time for the world. It allowed me to feel free and adventurous in a time when little else was moving," she expressed. "My intention was to create a safe place, a place without judgment. A place to be free of perfectionism and overthinking. A place to scream, release, feel freedom. It was a beautiful journey of exploration."

Beyoncé: Renaissance: Act I

Renaissance Act I was released on July 29, 2022, honored house music, the LGBTQI+ community and was a tribute to her late Uncle Johnny.  The album won four Grammys at the 2023 award show. She took home Best Dance/Electronic Music Album for Renaissance, Best Traditional R&B Performance for "Plastic Off The Sofa," Best R&B Song for "Cuff It," and Best Dance/Electronic Recording for "Break My Soul." After her fourth win of the night, she now has 32 Grammys, the most of any artist ever. The previous holder of the most Grammy awards was conductor Georg Solti with 31.

On top of the album, she had a record-breaking tour last year that began in May and ended in October. The Renaissance World Tour was the highest-grossing tour for both an R&B artist and a Black female artist with $579 million in revenue made per Forbes. In December, Renaissance: A Film By Beyoncé, hit theaters and is the fifth-highest-grossing concert film of all time. The film earned $22 million earned in its opening weekend, according to Deadline.

Beyoncé had a lot going into the first act of the Renaissance trilogy, so we can only imagine what to look forward to as she moves into the second act. Take a look below at what we know so far about her new album Cowboy Carter:

When Will 'Cowboy Carter' Be Released?

Beyoncé revealed on Instagram shortly after her Verizon ad aired during the Super Bowl that Cowboy Carter will arrive on March 29. In the teaser above, her song "Texas Hold 'Em" soundtracks the video as a taxi cab pulls off into the desert. The taxi cab also contains the license plate "Texas Hold 'Em." While the taxi makes it way around the town, the teaser ends revealing the release date.

What Songs Are On 'Cowboy Carter'?

At the time of this writing, only "Texas Hold 'Em" and "16 Carriages" have been released. Both singles were released on Feb. 11 following the new album announcement. "Texas Hold 'Em" debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard's Country charts making her the first Black woman to debut at the top spot on the chart. The song debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the next week it climbed to No. 1 marking the singer's ninth solo No. 1 hit. "16 Carriages" debuted at No. 9 on the Country chart and No. 38 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Dolly Parton's Thoughts On 'Cowboy Carter'

No tracklist pertaining any confirmed features has been announced at this time, but there has been some speculation. Country legend Dolly Parton believes that Beyoncé has created a cover to her 1973 hit "Jolene." "Well, I think she has! I think she's recorded ‘Jolene’ and I think it's probably gonna be on her country album, which I'm very excited about that," Parton said in an interview, per People.

Prior to Parton's speculation, she congratulated Beyoncé on making a country album. "I’m a big fan of Beyoncé and very excited that she’s done a country album," she wrote in a statement via Instagram. "So congratulations on your Billboard Hot Country number one single."

Will Taylor Swift Be On 'Cowboy Carter'?

Parton's "Jolene" cover news is the second speculation that has been heard about the upcoming album. In February, Killah B, who wrote and produced "Texas Hold 'Em," spoke to TMZ of the possibility of a Taylor Swift collaboration for Renaissance: Act II.

"You gonna have to wait and see," he said, adding, "Let’s just say she is on the approach of shocking the world. I’ll let your imagination decide what that means."

However, a source told Entertainment Weekly that Swift will not be on the new Beyoncé record. We'll just have to wait to see on release day.

What Is The Limited Edition Merch For 'Cowboy Carter'?

With the announcement of the official name for the album Cowboy Carter, Beyoncé released some limited edition merch on her official website. Let's walk through it below:

Vinyls
There are four vinyls to choose from for Cowboy Country. The first one is the black vinyl with the cover that shows Beyoncé with braided bangs and colorful beads. The second is a white vinyl that shows the singer with a snake-like sunglasses. The third is a blue vinyl, that shows her wearing a black cowboy hat and dangling silver earrings. The fourth is a red vinyl, that shows her wearing her light blonde hair with red lipstick.

CD Sets
Similar to her first drop for act one of Renaissance, there are some limited edition CD sets with t-shirts for purchase. The first CD set features a t-shirt with the artwork for "16 Carriages." It also includes a CD with the same cover as the black vinyl. For the second CD set, there is a red ringer shirt that reads the name of the album and includes a CD cover that matches the red vinyl.

All of the merch is available for pre-order and will ship on 3/29 -- the day of the album release.

Will Beyoncé Go On Tour?

For act one of Renaissance, Beyoncé went on a 52-tour stop around the world last summer as she performed for fans in France, Germany, Canada, her hometown of Houston, and her birthday show in Los Angeles. With this upcoming album, fans are wondering if she will do the same or possibly do a Las Vegas residency. The Las Vegas Sphere has the world's highest resolution LED screen (16K) that wraps around the arena. Beyoncé being such a visual artist, it would be impeccable to have her perform at this entertainment venue. Fans believe that she left a possible easter egg in her Verizon commercial when she was seen on top of the Las Vegas Sphere. Unfortunately at this time, a tour has not been confirmed by her team.

Beyoncé Releases Official Album Cover and Limited Edition Cover

Beyoncé released the official album cover for Cowboy Carter on March 19, featuring her sitting on a white horse and holding the American Flag. In her caption, she revealed how the project was inspired by an "experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed…and it was very clear that I wasn’t. But, because of that experience, I did a deeper dive into the history of Country music and studied our rich musical archive." She seems to be referring to the backlash she experienced when performing with the Dixie Chicks in 2016 at the Country Music Awards. The following day, she released a limited edition album cover where she is wearing just a sash that reads the project's title.
