Oxford High School: One Year After Tragic Shooting
A moment of silence will be observed by Michiganders today at 12:51 pm Wednesday, in honor of the children who loss their lives a year ago today at Oxford High School. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff at all state buildings. One year has passed since the tragic shooting at Oxford High School in which four students were killed, six others students were injured as well a teacher. A few events will be held to honor the young lives of Hana St. Juliana, Madisyn Baldwin, Justin Shilling, and Tate Myre who were all lost in the attack . School officials have dubbed today Wildcat Remembrance Day in honor of those students.
Gov. Whitmer issued a statement Tuesday saying, “Words will never be enough to meet the scale of the loss that this town has been through, But all of Michigan sends its love, its prayers, and its commitment to working together to keep all our families and communities safe.” According to Oxford Community Schools’ superintendent, all students have Wednesday off. In an effort to help students and staff cope with the tragedy at Oxford High School, an administrator, social worker, and teacher came to the decision that they would need different approaches to cope. Superintendent Ken Weaver, who resigned earlier this month, wrote in an October message to the families saying, “Spend this day how your family needs to — to heal, reflect, mourn, and most of all to love.” The Leaders of End Gun Violence Michigan and No Future Without Today, a group founded by Oxford survivors dedicated to gun reform, released the following press release: “We must hold onto our grief, our shock, our anger, and our compassion and fight for change.” Reina St. Juliana, Hana St. Juliana’s sister, wrote in the same news release: “We shouldn’t have to be doing any of this. We want to be able to live with our sisters, friends and classmates, not just remember them.” Detroit help us stand Oxford Strong with the family members, friends, students and loved ones of those lost in the awful shooting one year ago.
