Protesters Shut Down School Board Meeting in Dearborn
During a Dearborn Public Schools board meeting Monday, hundreds of angry protesters filled the board room with hopes and intentions to have a variety of LGBTQ books removed from the schools curriculum. Many of the protesters feel that the content of those books are too sexually explicit for children. Although officers were on hand during the meeting, they were unable to keep the it from erupting into chaos as protestors took it over. Protesters were given direct orders from police officers to stop interrupting board members, however they ignored them. It wasn’t until Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin arrive, did the crowd start to simmer down and relax. Shahin told the crowd, “Please, calm down, let’s have respect for each other. We can have a spirited debate, but we can’t conduct ourselves this way, guys, we just can’t. We’re better than this. Dearborn is better than this. This community is better than this. We’re brothers and sisters regardless of race, ethnicity, religion.”
Shahin said the board has suspended the meeting and plans to reschedule it for Thursday evening at Fordson High School. She believes there will be an even larger crowd and the high school is the best place for it. “Vote them out!” were the words the upset crowd repeatedly chanted during the rumbustious meeting inside the administrative center. Multiple protesters held up signs with anti-gay rhetoric in English and Arabic. Some of the signs that were held up read: “Keep your porno books to yourself,” “Homosexuality Big Sin,” and “If democracy matters, we’re the majority.”
On Sept. 25, a similar protest was held outside Henry Ford Centennial Library in Dearborn. A pro-book rally was held earlier that day at the library. As of right now, Dearborn Schools have removed several books from their curriculum and have placed those books under review to determine if they are appropriate for children.
