As part of a larger plan to solve crimes, the Detroit Police Department intends to use technology capable of pinpointing vehicle makes and models - and even bumper stickers at 75 intersections throughout the city!
The city began soliciting proposals for the installation of vehicle recognition sensors at intersections last month. The federal American Rescue Plan is funding the development of technology that will gather data about any vehicle traveling in any direction within the designated areas with the assistance of the technology.
A request for proposals indicates that city operators will be able to access the data "immediately," analyze it, and make it available to them at the city's Real Time Crime Center at Detroit Public Safety Headquarters.
According to a DPD spokesman, the proposed locations of the sensors are tentative and may change or expand. Police precincts are providing violent crime data to DPD to determine where they should be located, he said.
