Drive Thru Covid Test Back In Detroit
In light of COVID-19 spreading rapidly throughout Detroit, Mayor Mike Duggan held a news conference Wednesday afternoon to announce Detroit’s steps to increase COVID testing. The surge in COVID cases has many of Detroiters nervous and scared to say the least. With a reported over a million cases in one day in the US, Mayor Duggan has decided its time for Detroit to take some action. On Monday, the state of Michigan reported its second-largest daily case average since the beginning of the pandemic. As of Jan. 3, the state’s 7-day positive test rate increased to 29.93% and COVID hospitalizations have increased as well. As a result of the increase, Detroit public schools are switching to virtual learning through Jan. 14.

The city of Detroit reported a 36% COVID infection rate as of last week, attributed partly to the highly contagious omicron COVID variant. Duggan released a statement saying, “The City of Detroit is acting to make this the easiest place in the country to get a COVID test. We are providing 1,000 free rapid COVID-19 tests per day to help Detroiters stay safe, we are streamlining the testing process, to make it fast and efficient, so Detroiters who make an appointment can get in and out of either location in under an hour.” Vaccination demand in Detroit has increased, according to Mayor Duggan and he hopes this trend continues.
