Detroit’s RoboCop Statue is Finally Finished
A RoboCop statue that’s been in the works for roughly a decade is finally getting completed.
Back in 2011, Brandon Walley and Jerry Paffendorf were involved with commissioning local public art projects via Imagination Station, so they were brought into the RoboCop project.
As the story goes, in 2011, the idea for a statue of RoboCop went viral, the term “viral” being novel at the time. After people got wind of the concept, and a crowdfunding appeal raised more than $17,000 from more than 900 backers worldwide, according to the MetroTimes.
The funding drive ended more than six weeks later, and it featured more than 2,700 backers pledging more than $65,000.
For a multitude of reasons, the statue has taken a long time to finish. Try 10 years. But, it’s finally ready.
The statue is expected to be moved into storage while it waits for its new home.
According to the MetroTimes, Walley says the the stakeholders that have “lined up in support of the statue will help see that it finds a suitable home.”
“It’s something that will be enjoyed and respected by generations and generations,” he says. “The citizens will have a nice piece.”
